When Angela Lloyd hit town last weekend, she showed me her winged socks, “I got them when I worked at a children’s theatre in Nebraska.” These are such great socks that last year someone convinced Angela to make a pair for another woman who loves weird socks. And what could be more empowering than winged socks? Would these give their wearer the speed of Mercury or Hermes? Those two fellows, one Roman and one Greek, wore winged sandals: Talaria (Greek: άρβυλόπτερα). They were said to be made by the god Hephaestus of imperishable gold and they flew the god as swift as any bird.
But when Angela arrived in Sonora, she really wasn’t quite sure how she was going to pull off the creation of these magical socks in time for their official delivery (Sunday night). Then I took her into The Guessing Room (more about that another time). And there we found just the right fabric!
Sunday morning I pulled out my dear old friend, my sewing machine, and I began! Within about one hour, she had a pair of magical winged socks! And now Angela thinks that I should set up a cottage industry and just make winged socks! What do you think? No matter what, they will make you run faster!….At least according to ancient legend they will.
